The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
